Pharmacy Students

Here is an update from the students at Roseman University (formally know as the University of Southern Nevada):

Drug Abuse Awareness Team (DAAT)

On September 29th and 30th the Salt Lake County Aging Services hosted the Senior Expo at the South Towne Expo Center and invited us to operate the drug take-back booth.  We had more than 30 eager Roseman University student volunteers.  Although we weren’t given the total weight of medication collected, we were told that it was more of a success this year than in years past.  We’d like to extend a special thanks to Sandy Police Department for having officers on site to make this take-back event possible.  The Utah Poison Control Center also provided us with brochures to assist seniors who didn’t bring medications to the Expo.

The DEA’s National Drug Take Back Day was October 29th 2011; this afforded us another opportunity to get the word out about proper disposal of medication.  Our students joined the South Jordan Police Department and the SMART Coalition from Utah County.  At the South Jordan City Building, over 200lbs. of medication were collected.  Students assisted police from the South Jordan Police Department in collecting, sorting, and inventorying the medications.   Students also worked with the SMART Coalition at the Macey’s Food & Pharmacy in Sandy.  Again the Sandy Police and DEA made this event possible.

DAAT members look forward to finding more opportunities to serve our community.  Some future projects include contacting the Boys and Girls Club, “brown bag” events in Senior Centers and other take-back events.

Roseman Student Alliance (ASHP, APhA)

Volunteer/Service Projects

Students participated in a 5K fundraiser in October, raising money for a young man with cancer.  The group decorated and donated a tree to the Festival of Trees in December.  In the future, the Student Alliance plans to contribute to Globus Relief in the spring of 2012.

Lunch and Learn Program

The Student Alliance sponsors “lunch and learn” seminars to expose students to a variety of topics.  This year the topics ranged from how to design and deliver poster presentations to how to prepare for residencies. Speakers in 2011 included Dr. Elizabeth Sebranek-Evans, Dr. Katy Mathews, and Dr. Bruce Leavitt from Intermountain Medical Center.

Journal Club

Student Alliance will again be hosting afterschool Journal Clubs in the Spring as a new tradition at Roseman University.

ASHP Clinical Skills Competition

On October 12th, the ASHP/APhA Student Alliance hosted the annual ASHP Clinical Skills Competition on campus.  After a close finish between the Henderson, Nevada P3 students and the South Jordan, Utah P3 students, Ramzy Moubarak and Sal Rivas Jr. from the Henderson Campus moved on to the national competition.  On Sunday, December 4th at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, Roseman scored in the top 10 among over 110 colleges of pharmacy. Well done Roseman P3s!
